9 Summer Makeup Tips

Summer is full of pleasures — but melting makeup, sliding eyeliner, and supersticky lipstick are not among them. "In hot weather, applying your makeup should be as simple and comfy as putting on your favorite pair of jeans and flip-flops," says New York City makeup artist Troy Surratt. "But the heat and humidity are a challenge, so you have to make a few little changes to your routine." That's why we asked top makeup artists to spill their best tips — the same ones they use on star clients who are being filmed under hot lights or in humid locations — for keeping makeup looking fresh and pretty, even when the weather is working against you. Get Pretty for a Cozy Date Night

Right around this time of year, I stop wanting to leave the house. Like, ever.

While I’m definitely the kind of girl who enjoys a good night out on the town, when the thermostat drops below 30 degrees it’s time to hunker down with a fantastic home-cooked meal (click here to browse all my favorite recipes), a truly terrible horror movie (because those are the best kind) and a very special someone.

A cozy date night is all about candles. It's about wine. It's about brownies made from a box and eaten

Check out these four tips for streamlining your beauty routine for a stress-free morning

How to Streamline Your Makeup Routine for a Stress-Free MorningIf you want to streamline your morning makeup routine, the key is organization. I like to arrange my stash according to item type (eye shadows and liners in one drawer, for instance, blushes and bronzers in another). The drawers I use are from a large desk that I actually employ as a vanity table.

I also like to keep a tightly edited "favorites of the moment" makeup bag on top of my table. I switch these "greatest hits" out often depending on what I'm testing, but

Small, round, deep set—learn how your eye shape can affect your brows.

• Deep-Set Eyes: Fill in brows with a Brow & Eyemakers Pencil two shades lighter than your hair. Line top and bottom lash line with a pencil in a matching shade.

• Round Eyes: Fill in brows with a Brow & Eyemakers Pencil shade that matches your hair. Line top lash line with a Perfect Point Plus Pencil in a darker, smokier shade.

• Small Eyes: The softer the brow, the bigger your eyes will appear. Choose a soft shade of Brow & Eyemakers Pencil and smudge a deeper shadow along top lash line. Then finish with LashBlast Volume Mascara in Black Brown.

Application tips for blemishes, rosacea, and beyond!

Blemishes

  • Wash your hands before handling your face. Dirt and oils on your hands will only aggravate the blemish.
  • Apply an oil-control foundation, starting at the center of the face and blending outward.
  • Choose a concealer with cool undertones to counteract the redness of the blemish.
  • Avoid irritation by using a brush to both apply and blend concealer.
  • Set with an oil-control powder. Use this powder throughout the day to control shine.

Concealer Tips

Discover the techniques the pros use to get a flawless finish, every time.

  • Begin with the under-eye area. Using a brush or wand, lightly dab concealer along the darkest area under your eye in a crescent shape. Be sure to apply to the inner and outer corners of your eyes as well.
  • Take the pad of your ring finger and lightly dab to blend. Do not pull or rub. This will irritate

Know Your Skin Type

Normal Skin
Normal Skin usually looks and feels smooth, but can also react to changes in the environment: oilier in the summer and drier in the winter.
  • Choose foundations and powders for normal skin, like TRUblend for easy shade matching or Clean for a water-based fresh feel.
  • Apply a layer of moisturizer underneath for dry, winter conditions or whenever you enter a parched environment.
  • Keep a pressed powder on hand for oilier moments or more humid days.
Dry Skin
Dry Skin occurs naturally as you age as the oil glands decrease their output. Dryness may also reflect your skin's sensitivity to skin care products, cleansers, or even your

Mascara 101: How to Apply Mascara

Learn how to work the wand like a pro from the very first try

• Clamp an eyelash curler at the root of your upper lashes and hold for five seconds. Repeat on the middle of lashes and again near the tips.

• To go to great lengths, place curler along the upper lashline. In a slow, even motion, go from roots to tips.

• For thickness, hold brush as close as possible to base of lashes, and wiggle it as you move it up through lashes. (This motion helps get every lash.) Let mascara dry for ten seconds, then replace brush at lash base, and wiggle again as you move up the lashes.

Sponge? Puff? Or Brush?

Which applicators are right for your makeup routine? It’s time to find out!

Sponge
Sponges are perfect for liquid or cream-based formulas. They provide the fullest and most precise application. Dip a sponge into your liquid makeup and smooth a thick layer all over your face. Add extra coverage in areas with uneven tone.

Puff
Puffs work great for powdering on the go. They fit into most compacts and provide buildable yet even coverage. Lightly dab the puff over shiny or uneven areas. A few thin layers provide better coverage than one thicker one.
